Research Opportunities

The Joint Quantum Institute offers research opportunities for graduate students and postdoctoral researchers.

Postdoctoral researchers

may apply for Fellowships in both theory and experiment. The application deadline for Theoretical Postdoctoral Fellows is Dec. 15, 2009. The deadline for Experimental Postdoctoral Fellows will be announced soon.

JQI Postdoctoral Fellows are expected to work in close collaboration with one or more JQI Fellows. The term of appointment is two years at a salary of $63,400 per year plus benefits. Interested theoreticians with working experience in areas studied at JQI are invited to apply. Graduate students

in the Department of Physics at the University of Maryland may take part in JQI research if selected by a Fellow. Students should make inquiries directly to the Fellow whose research area is of interest. For general information about applying to the Department of Physics graduate program, see:

In addition, JQI has a limited number of Graduate Assistantships.

JQI Graduate Assistants

are required to work in close collaboration with JQI Fellows. The term of appointment is two years, renewable yearly for up to five years. The initial salary will be a research-assistant salary of $20,000 per year and a $10,000 fellowship for a total of $30,000 plus benefits. The Joint Quantum Institute is a research partnership between University of Maryland (UMD) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology, with the support and participation of the Laboratory for Physical Sciences.

Created in 2006 to pursue theoretical and experimental studies of quantum physics in the context of information science and technology, JQI is located on UMD's College Park campus.
